"Can a saved person ever be lost? Can a Christian, a person who has received Jesus Christ equally his personal Savior, sin to such a degree that he volition lose his salvation, get to hell or Hades at expiry, and eventually be consigned to the lake of fire at the great white throne judgment?" [1]

That question takes on clearer focus if we get-go reply two other questions: (1) What does it hateful to be lost? (2) What does it mean to exist saved?

What does it mean to be lost?

Jesus came to seek and to salve those who are lost (Luke 19:10). What does it mean to be a lost and guilty sinner in the eyes of God? Why is information technology that the not-Christian is under the wrath of God? (John 3:36)

The essential reason that we all were once lost and guilty sinners under the wrath of God was our relationship to sin—any lack of conformity to the grapheme and will of God.

Are nosotros sinners because nosotros sin, or do we sin considering we are sinners? Both are true. The Bible says that we are all guilty of personal acts and attitudes of sin (Romans 3:23; cf. 3:10-18; Mark. 7:20-23). It besides indicates that we are guilty because we are born with a sinful nature (Psalm 51:5), ultimately inherited from our ancestral male parent, Adam. The Bible fifty-fifty shows that all humankind is viewed by God as having sinned in Adam's initial sin (Romans 5:12).

The punishment that is the effect of our sin is death…

Concrete death (the separation of the soul from the body), which affects humankind as the result of Adam's sin charged to our account (Romans 5:12-xiv)

Spiritual death (the separation of the soul from God), a condition transmitted to u.s. from Adam through our ancestors (Ephesians 2:1,5)

Eternal death (the culmination and extension of spiritual expiry), the eternal separation of the soul from God in the lake of fire (Revelation twenty:fourteen)

Scripture describes our status before believing in Jesus Christ every bit being nether the wrath of God:

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son volition non see life, for God'south wrath remains on him."
-John three:36

What does information technology mean to be saved?

"Salvation is from the LORD" (Jonah 2:ix). It is both negative and positive (Colossians 1:13), for we are saved from a lost status (our sins are forgiven), and nosotros are brought into a saved status that provides the believer with several dozen positive blessings the moment nosotros trust Christ.

These blessings are very comprehensive, for our "salvation includes every divine undertaking for the believer from his deliverance out of the lost estate to his final presentation in glory conformed to the image of Christ." [2] Paul declares that God has already blessed the states with all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:three).

Some of the principal blessings of salvation include:

Regeneration, which is an instantaneous work of the Holy Spirit in originating a new nature in the believing sinner and so equally to transform the laic from a country of spiritual decease to spiritual life (cf. John iii:v, 10:ten,28; 1 John five:11-12)

Justification, past which God declares the laic righteous since clothed in the righteousness of Christ (Romans three:21-26)

Freed from the domain and dominion of sin (Romans half-dozen:2-14)

Given as a gift from the Male parent to the Son (John 17:ii-24)

Placed as a member in the spiritual torso of Christ, the church (1 Corinthians 12:13)

and many, many more positive acts of God that would accept to be reversed if a saved person could always over again be lost.

Can a saved person ever once more be lost?

Can a Christian lose his salvation? Can a person one time saved, having received God's free souvenir of eternal life and having been born into the family of God, over again return exactly and completely to the position of existence a lost and guilty sinner in the optics of God? Of course not! The very nature of the spiritual life that has been received—eternal—and the Divine Source and Agent of that life—God—forbid drawing the conclusion that a saved person can always again be lost.

"And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand."
-John 10:28 (NKJV)

This Biblical doctrine that a person who has received Jesus Christ, been born into the family of God, and justified past faith, tin can never over again exist lost is sometimes chosen eternal security. Others speak of it as the perseverance of the saints. The latter expression might better be termed the perseverance of God in behalf of the saints, because the security of our salvation does not rest on us just on God—it is based on the work of the Male parent, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

What is the work of the Father in securing eternally our salvation?

The eternal security of believers rests on the Father's purpose in choosing usa to salvation in eternity past and predestinating us to sonship in Jesus Christ (Ephesians ane:iv-5).

Further, God's power is promised to keep us secure in salvation (Romans 8:28-30), for the ones that the Father foreknew, predestined, called (effectually to conservancy, cf. 1 Corinthians 1:21-24), and justified are the very aforementioned ones he "glorified". (Paul uses the past tense since in God's sight it is "good as done" that nosotros will i day exist conformed to the prototype of Christ in heaven).

Further, Jesus Christ guaranteed that we are secure in His and the Father's hand, and and then He will continue safe each ane who has received the gift of eternal life (John x:28-29).

What is the work of the Son in securing eternally our conservancy?

Our security further rests on the decease and the prayers of Jesus Christ. He has redeemed u.s. (Ephesians i:7) and removed the wrath of God from the states (Romans 3:25) so that we may be justified (Romans 5:1), forgiven (Colossians two:13), and sanctified (one Corinthians 1:2).

Further, "Christ's present ministry building in heaven of praying for His ain consists of two aspects: a preventive ministry (intercession) and a curative ministry building (advocacy). His prayer in [John] chapter 17 illustrates the preventive aspect. In that location He prayed that we might be kept from the evil one (5. 15), that we would be sanctified (v. 17), that we would be united (v. 21), that nosotros would exist in sky with Him (five. 24), and that we might behold His glory (five. 24). Because of His unceasing intercession for u.s. He is able to save us completely and eternally (Hebrews 7:25)". [3]
-Charles Ryrie

The "curative" attribute of Christ'due south present ministry building is indicated in 1 John 2:1. When we practice sin every bit believers, He acts as our Abet before the Father, forgiveness and cleansing of all our sins.

What is the piece of work of the Holy Spirit in securing eternally our conservancy?

Past the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, we have received eternal life (Titus 3:v). When we trusted Christ, the Holy Spirit began an eternal indwelling ministry in u.s. (John 14:17). Also He was the seal placed on the states by the Father to guarantee our future inheritance (Ephesians 4:thirty). And He baptized us into union with Christ and into the trunk of believers (ane Corinthians 12:13).

Can a saved person ever be lost?

"For a believer to lose his salvation would demand a reversal and an undoing of all the preceding works of the Father, Son, and Spirit. The key outcome in the give-and-take of the believer'southward security concerns the outcome of who does the saving. If homo is responsible for securing his salvation, so he can be lost; if God secures the person's salvation, then the person is forever secure." [4]
-Paul Enns

"What and so shall nosotros say to these things? If God is for u.s., who is against us?"
-Romans eight:31; cf. vv. 32-39
